Netlibrary access update

Through NCLive, we get access to some 24,000+ e-books from Netlibrary. For the last couple of years, NC Live has also added hundreds of downloadable e-audiobooks. These are all accessible through the library catalog here , but as of January 1st, 2009, NC Live will discontinue its subscription to the e-audiobook service. Part of this decision was based on the restrictive licensing placed on Netlibrary e-audiobooks, and it's incompatibility with playing devices (the titles are not compatible with ipod or Microsoft Zune, two of the most popular mp3 players).

The Netlibrary e-books will still be accessible, but after January 1st, all e-audiobooks will be removed from the catalog, and any previously downloaded titles will not be renewable once their checkout license expires.

Also, remember that Netlibrary e-books, while not the most user-friendly to read, are full-text indexed and searchable. NC Live title list , public domain Netlibrary collection title list .

Historical publications of the US Commision on Civil Rights web site is the Thurgood Marshall Law Library's attempt to create a complete electronic record of United States Commission on Civil Rights publications held in the Library's collection and available on the USCCR Web site. Richmond Daily Dispatch is the result of a National Leadership Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and collaboration between the University of Richmond, Tufts University's Perseus Project, and the Virginia Center for Digital History to provide access to Civil War Era newspapers. There are currently 1384 issues of the paper available online, ranging in date from November 1860 through December 1865. Proximity and Boolean searching is available, and the ability to browse by calendar dates is a convenient feature.

The Complete Works of Charles Darwin provides "Darwin's complete publications, many handwritten manuscripts and the largest Darwin bibliography and manuscript catalogue ever published. The film preservation guide: the basics for archives libraries and museums is a publication of the National Film Preservation Society and is aimed at helping inexperienced professionals at research institutions with film collections to develop preservation techniques. It is intended primarily for those in libraries, archives, and museums who have little or no technical experience with film preservation.

Foreign Relations of the United States, the Department of State's record of official foreign policy decisions , has now been digitized, in part, by the University of Wisconsin-Madison Digital Libraries. The collection covers 1861-1958, and 1960, and can be browsed by volume or searched. The pages are resizeable, and are available as printable images, or OCR generated text (for copying, pasting, etc.). Note: Full-text searching isn't 100% flawless due to possible errors in the uncorrected optical character recognition (OCR) scanning.

Boating Uses, Economic Significance, and Information Inventory for North Carolina's Offshore Area, "The Point" is a 3 volume set published by the Minerals Management Service, a branch of the U.S. Department of Interior. It provides digital access to rare books, manuscripts, and other primary resources from Virginia's history, including the full run of the Virginia Gazette. Users can browse the collections, or make use of the site's search features, which include Boolean logic and word truncation.

American Women Through Time is a site maintained by Ken Middleton and provides chronological timelines of notable women or events, with hyperlinks to relevant online sources. There are also links to primary resources such as diaries, advice columns, newspaper, and even quilts. Links to other timelines, including ones categorized by name, state, and subject are also included.

Space Available: Economic Realities of Convention Centers as Economic Development Strategy is a report from the Brookings Institute that describes a national trend of waning demand for convention center space, while at the same time many local governments nationwide are investing heavily in such facilities as a way to boost economic development. International Conference on Shellfish Restoration cd-roms

New iLumina records

Marine botanical specimens - the first of a many images representing the slide collection of Dr. Wilson Freshwater - were recently added to iLumina. Eventually Dr. Freshwater plans to digitize all of the slides, which include various species of marine plants and algae, and submit them to the iLumina digital library.

The Science of Spectroscopy, a NASA-sponsored project established in the summer of 1999, is an educational wiki that explains spectroscopy, the use of light to study matter. It provides an introduction to light and its uses in space science, astronomy, medicine & health, environmental research, and consumer products. The ultimate goal of the site is to become the most comprehensive source of information on spectroscopy available free of charge. It is in both French and English, and users who register (which is free) can edit entries, upload files, and create watch lists.

Fun Based Learning is a site designed by a former middle school teacher/computer programmer to be a resource for teachers and beginning chemistry students. It provides free online chemistry learning games: Chembalancer teaches balancing chemical equations and Element Quiz teaches element symbols, names, and facts. It also provides for teachers a template for designing quizzes and lesson plans for chemistry topics.

Virtual International Business & Economic Sources (VIBES) provides over 2,800 links to Internet sources for international business and economic information that are free of charge. Links include full-text articles and research reports (in English), statistical tables and graphs, and web portals (pages with links to other sources). The VIBES resources can be browsed by topic, continental region, and country.

BBC News Country Profiles offers profiles of countries that provide an instant guide to history, politics and economic background of them. The interface features pull down menus that list territories and countries by continent, and also allows users to browse in-depth information on 20 international organizations. The site also includes access to audio and video clips from the BBC archives.

Bureau of Labor Statistics includes statistical and economic information on the United States, searchable by keyword. The site also includes many other sources of statistical information covering industry, employment, demographics, geography, inflation and spending, and much more. Information can be searched and manipulated by a number of variables.

U.S. Census Bureau provides information about the Census Bureau, such as its organization, mission, employment opportunities and procurement activities; as well as links to census information including censtats; the current population count; current economic indicators; and a variety of access tools, including map stats, profiles of states and counties, MABLE/GeoCorr (a geographic correspondence engine), a census look-up form; the Tiger map server, and the U.S. Gazetteer. The site may be searched by keyword or browsed alphabetically by subject.

Economic Census Briefing Room provides easy access to current Federal economic indicators. It provides links to information produced by various Federal agencies. All of the information included in the Economic Statistics Briefing Room is maintained and updated by the statistical units of those agencies.

National Geographic Online is the online version of National Geographic, published monthly by the National Geographic Society in Washington, D.C. The site offers access to features from the current issue* of the magazine, as well as a publications index and an online shopping area. Libraries Designed for Learning was published by the Council for Library and Information Resources (CLIR). The report is intended for academic librarians who are responsible for library construction and renovation projects, and for campus academic officers who wish to engage substantively with the question of how library space can advance the core learning and teaching missions of their institutions.

In it, Yale Librarian Emeritus Scott Bennett conducted an extensive study of the motivations and planning methods for library renovation and construction projects undertaken between 1992 and 2001. His study entailed a Web-based survey of more than 380 institutions, and phone interviews with 31 library directors and chief academic officers. He concludes that while most of the projects are serving users well, they have rarely been informed by a systematic assessment of how students learn and faculty teach. The Cities of Paul: Images and Interpretations from the Harvard New Testament Archaeology Project CD-ROM includes written descriptions and nearly 900 images from sites in Greece and Turkey (ancient Asia Minor) illuminating the religious and civic lives of peoples encountered by Paul and other leaders in the earliest churches. These include maps, artifacts, places, and more.

This educational tool features image indexes of names, architecture, coins, inscriptions, sculptures, and ancient authors. A general index, a glossary of terms, and bibliography are also included. It allows users to create their own slide show from the images and the descriptions, and also has the option for adding text in paragraph or bulleted form, and in English or Greek, to the slideshow. Coral reefs and global climate change is the tenth in a series of Pew Center reports examining the potential impacts of climate change on the U.S. environment. It details the likely impacts of climate change over the next century to coral reef ecosystems both in U.S. waters and around the world. Robert W. Buddemeier of the Kansas Geological Survey, Joan A. Kleypas from the National Center for Atmospheric Research, and Richard B. Aronson from the Dauphin Island Sea Lab prepared this report, which was published in February 2004. This first annual meeting of the Combined Effects Think Tank to Support CREWS Modeling had several objectives: explain what is known of certain coral reef problem domains as they relate to anthropogenic stress and coral reef response; determine which in situ monitoring instruments would help in these research problems; and, provide a dialogue to enhance current expert system modules or to develop new ones.

Recognizing the problem of potential global climate change, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) established the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 1988. It is open to all members of the UN and WMO. Climate Change 2001: IPCC Third Assessment Report is a collection of three reports and an overall synthesis, each freely available as PDF in a variety of languages, that examines different aspects of climate change. The Second Assessment Report was published in 1995, and the Fourth Assessment Report (referred to as AR4) is expected to be released in 2007.

Ocean acidification due to increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide is a recent paper from the Royal Society (Great Britain) that discusses how carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted to the atmosphere by human activities is being absorbed by the oceans, making them more acidic (lowering the pH the measure of acidity). According to the paper, evidence indicates that emissions of carbon dioxide from human activities over the past 200 years have already led to a reduction in the average pH of surface seawater of 0.1 units and could fall by 0.5 units by the year 2100. This pH is probably lower than has been experienced for hundreds of millennia and, critically, at a rate of change probably 100 times greater than at any time over this period.

A to Z Teacher Stuff is teacher-created, and designed to help teachers find online resources more quickly and easily. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics is a nonprofit professional association dedicated to the improvement of math education, based in Reston, Virginia. LEARN NC (North Carolina) is a program of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Education. LEARN NC offers resources for North Carolina K-12 educators in all subject areas. These resources include lesson plans, discussion forums, articles, professional development materials, news on upcoming events, a searchable annotated list of 3,000 educational websites, and more.

Eduscapes promotes itself as "a site for life-long learners of all ages." This web site features a links for news, technology assistance, and professional development, and will be useful to teachers, parents, and students. Annette Lamb and Larry Johnson designed this web site to share their own love of learning with others. As authors and educators, they work with teachers, parents and children around the world to effectively integrate technology into teaching and learning environments.

The National Science Teachers Association promotes excellence in science education. Their web site offers calendars, news, teacher resources and more. The National Council for the Social Studies is the largest organization in the country devoted solely to social studies education.
